What are arcs, locations, and beats in Quill?+
Arcs and locations are structural scenes that organise your campaign world: think story chapters and places. Beats are the playable moments nested inside them: combat encounters, social interactions, exploration, rest stops, and travel sequences. Together they form a nested tree that mirrors how you actually think about your campaign.
How deep can I nest scenes?+
Quill supports up to 5 levels of nesting. A typical structure might be Arc > Location > Combat Beat, but you can go deeper for complex storylines. Arc > Sub-Arc > Location > Area > Encounter.
What are campaign tones?+
Campaign tones set the narrative flavour for your world. Quill offers 10 tones. Heroic, Dark Fantasy, Whimsical, Horror, Epic, Intrigue, Mythic, Gritty, Mystery, and Pastoral. Your tone influences suggestions and companion responses on Tome and Grimoire tiers.
Do I have to click through tiles to see my prep?+
No. Opening a beat docks its prep into a panel beside the tile grid, and it opens on an Overview: every section you have written, on one scrollable page. Click a heading to edit that section in place, then go back to the whole view. On a phone you can toggle between the Overview and the prep tiles, and Quill remembers which you prefer.
Is campaign structure free?+
Yes. Campaign structure, arcs, locations, beats, nested scene trees, tones, and all prep tools, is free on every Quill tier, including the free Scroll plan.
