You built the world before session one. The campaign has a timeline. Your NPCs have histories that predate the players' arrival. You have documents they'll never read. That's fine. Those documents make everything else feel real.

Your session notes have notes about the notes.

Architect

Your world runs on systems. The faction relationships aren't window dressing. They have mechanics. Reputation is tracked. The political economy moves whether the players engage it or not. You built all of it so they could use it. The world is a gift wrapped in legible rules, and the rules are the point.

You want players to feel capable. To understand enough of the machine that their decisions feel smart. When players figure out the faction angle that gets them what they want without combat, that's the session working as designed.

Strengths

• +Players who engage with systems feel genuine, grounded agency. Their plans matter because the world has consistent rules to work with.
• +Political and factional intrigue lands because the systems are real and discoverable, not improvised on the fly
• +High-information play rewards investigation, planning, and long-term thinking in ways most tables don't support

Blind Spots

• -Systems players don't engage with are invisible prep time. Hard to know in advance which levers they'll pull.
• -Can over-engineer mechanical complexity at the expense of emotional accessibility; players may feel more like analysts than characters

The Tension

The story can calcify. The plan can become more interesting to you than what's happening at the table. Watch the room.
