You've built a world worth living in and handed the players the keys. Your prep isn't plot. It's setting. Faction relationships, regional economics, NPC motivations that exist independent of what the players are doing. You don't drive the story. You maintain the world and watch what they do with it.

Your prep folder has entries for people the players haven't met yet.

Steward

You built the world's systems as tools for the players to use. The faction relationships are transparent and discoverable. The political economy can be leveraged. The NPC relationships are a map of opportunities. Your prep is a toolkit, and you want them to pick it up and engage every piece of it.

Different from the Patron, who wants players to feel free and successful in a general sense. The Steward wants players to feel mechanically empowered. When players hack the faction system to get what they want without drawing a sword, you've done your job.

Strengths

• +Players who engage with world systems feel genuine, grounded power. Their scheming works because the systems are real.
• +Political intrigue, faction play, and long-term planning all work because the world's moving parts are consistent
• +Deep player agency: sandbox play with full systemic support underneath the freedom

Blind Spots

• -Requires self-directed players who want to engage with systems; groups seeking a narrative hook or forward momentum may feel overwhelmed by the machinery
• -Prep time invested in systems players don't discover is a real risk. Hard to know in advance which paths they'll take.

The Tension

Requires self-directed players. Groups looking for forward momentum may feel adrift in the open world.
