Emergent + Scaffolded
You've built a world worth living in and handed the players the keys. Your prep isn't plot. It's setting. Faction relationships, regional economics, NPC motivations that exist independent of what the players are doing. You don't drive the story. You maintain the world and watch what they do with it.
Your prep folder has entries for people the players haven't met yet.
Patron
You prepped for everything so the players can do anything. You want them to succeed. The world is a gift. You've built it to be alive and responsive, and your emotional orientation is entirely toward their experience inside it. When they find the thread that interests them, when they make a connection that matters, when the world surprises them in a good way: that's winning.
The sandbox is warm. It has teeth, consequences are real, but you're rooting for them and they can feel it.
Strengths
- +Players feel real agency. The world responds to what they do. Their choices actually matter.
- +Sandbox play at its best: freedom that means something because the stakes are real and the world is alive
- +Players who want to feel capable and valued find exactly the right table here
Blind Spots
- -Can spend more time on worldbuilding than on what players will actually encounter. Prep depth doesn't equal prep relevance.
- -Requires players who are self-directed; groups who want a hook may feel rudderless
The Tension
Requires self-directed players. Groups looking for forward momentum may feel adrift in the open world.
