Emergent + Scaffolded

You've built a world worth living in and handed the players the keys. Your prep isn't plot. It's setting. Faction relationships, regional economics, NPC motivations that exist independent of what the players are doing. You don't drive the story. You maintain the world and watch what they do with it.

Your prep folder has entries for people the players haven't met yet.

Chronicler

You record what happens. The world was designed fair: every choice has a cost, every action has a consequence, and the ledger is accurate. You're not trying to punish players, but the world doesn't forgive on your behalf. The faction that was slighted remembers. The resource that was spent is gone. The timeline advances whether the players are ready or not.

This is emergent storytelling at its most rigorous. The story that comes out is the one the dice and the world logic wrote together.

Strengths

• +Survival is meaningful. Nothing was handed; everything was earned or lost on fair terms

Blind Spots

• -Can create sessions that feel more like a simulation than a story. The world-state logic can crowd out emotional, character-driven moments.
• -The systemic accuracy can feel cold when players are invested in an outcome that the ledger won't support

The Tension

Requires self-directed players. Groups looking for forward momentum may feel adrift in the open world.
