Session prep is optional. The story is what happens when players make choices in a world that has opinions. You don't write the arc; you follow the consequences. The table generates everything together, and you're there to make sure those consequences land.

Players ask if you're okay because you always look like you're thinking about something.

Reckoner

You follow consequences wherever they lead, including painful places, and you make sure they land. There's no prep and no framework, but there's full presence. When a player's choice has a consequence, the consequence happens now, visibly, with weight. You don't design the challenge. You make the challenge real by being willing to let the story be honest.

Different from the Anarchist, who challenges through unpredictability and chaos as a feature. The Reckoner challenges through immediacy. The darkness comes from honesty, not entropy. The table knows something is coming because they know you won't look away.

Strengths

  • +Table moments have genuine urgency. Players are always present because the world always responds.
  • +Emotional consequence is immediate and visceral. Nothing stays abstract at your table.
  • +Morally complex sessions emerge naturally from consequence-following; no arc-planning needed

Blind Spots

  • -Full presence at emotional intensity every session can exhaust players. Not every table needs a reckoning every week.
  • -Easy to mistake constant urgency for quality session design; sometimes the most honest consequence of a quiet situation is a quiet session

The Tension

Without structural discipline, campaigns can lose continuity. Players who need to plan ahead may feel like there's nothing to grip.
